Dr. Valerie Maxwell is a Project Leader and Mathematics Education Specialists on the Delaware Mathematics Coalition’s  Professional Teaching & Learning Team. She received her doctorate in School Leadership, Curriculum & Instruction at the University of Delaware. Since retiring in 2011, she has worked with several statewide mathematics leadership projects funded by the Delaware Mathematics Science Partnership, serving as the project leader for the Elementary Math Teacher Leadership (EMTL) Project grant and as part of the planning team for the New Normal, TRU-Math, Leadership Coaching Lab, and Transforming and Understanding Professional Learning (TUPL) projects. Within these projects, her efforts have been concentrated on developing teachers’ mathematics content and curricular knowledge and planning and reflecting on video captured as part of teachers’ lesson study cycles.

Val was a recipient of the University of Delaware G. Cuthbert Webber Award. The award is given to a distinguished member of the mathematics education community for distinguished service in advancing mathematics education. She was also a recipient of the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the Delaware Department of Education. Prior to retirement, Valerie worked as a statewide professional development specialist for the University of Delaware’s Math & Science Education Resource Center (MSERC) and as a mathematics supervisor for the Appoquinimink School District. She began her career as a middle school mathematics and technology teacher.
