Last fall (2021) mathematics leaders from the Appoquinimink, Caesar Rodney, Cape Henlopen school districts and members of the Delaware Math Coalition’s Professional Teaching & Learning Team began engaging in a content-focused professional development series entitled Math Milestones. Developed as a mechanism for supporting stakeholders across the country as they returned to school and engaged students in grade level aligned content, Math Milestones modules are purposefully designed to deepen participants’ understanding of the big ideas in their grade level as well as the foundational connections needed to nurture and promote students’ ongoing success. The materials are grounded in an assets-based view of children. As part of the training, participants learn to “lean into language” and more meaningfully capitalize on the instructional routines embedded in their high quality instructional materials in order to promote access and mathematical engagement and to consciously elevate students’ math agency and sense of self efficacy as doers of mathematics.
