This visual numbers activity can be used to promote community and connections between the structure of number and visual representations and numeric representations of prime and composite numbers. To facilitate the task, it is helpful to provide some individual think time with a general prompt such as “What do you notice? What do you wonder?” Then ask individuals to share what they noticed and wondered and let the conversation flow from there. As more shares emerge, connections between prime factorizations are likely to surface. Can participants predict the look of a number not on the page? Can they justify why it appears that way? Can they see other patterns? This activity from Jo Boaler’s Youcube site is likely to promote fun and stimulating conversations in your group!!
