The promise of the Leadership Coaching Lab (LCL) is to build a robust mathematics community committed to engaging in sustained professional learning experiences that promote deeper learning, mathematically intense pre and post-lesson video analysis conversations, and more skillful enactment of lessons from their high quality instructional materials.


About This Program

The promise of the Leadership Coaching Lab (LCL) is to build a robust mathematics leadership community in which the role of curriculum, lesson study, video analysis, and teacher growth are public and itself the focus of study among colleagues. Across the year, sessions provide Leadership Coaching Lab participants with recursive opportunities to reflect on their role in engaging colleagues in planning instruction, leading mathematically intense conversations, and using video to develop a keen eye for the essence of the mathematics in conceptually-grounded lessons from their high quality instructional materials (HQIM). 

Content-focused and leadership capacity goals for LCL include:

  • Engaging in mathematically intense conversations about lessons and learning from HQIM;
  • Analyzing video-based teaching episodes and providing feedback focused on enhancing students’ opportunities to learn the desired learning goal;
  • Developing deeper insights related to identified vertical trajectories in the K-12 standards;
  • Utilizing structures and routines that promote mathematical reasoning, representations-based argumentation, and algebraic generalization;
  • Evaluating the extent to which a given set of visuals and/or contextual representations is useful/powerful in promoting specific conceptual learning goals;
  • Deepening our understanding of how teaching for conceptual understanding and students’ sense of self efficacy are linked; and
  • Applying our “keen eye” in support of planning and implementing stronger lessons from our HQIM.

Delaware Mathematics Coalition Building Local & State Level Math Leadership Capacity

As a community, the Delaware Mathematics Coalition (DMC) is committed to creating more powerful and robust mathematics teaching and learning environments in Delaware classrooms. As an alliance of partners, DMC members continually plan for ways to share resources, provide sustained learning opportunities for their teachers, coaches and administrators, and collectively build local and state mathematics leadership capacity. Across the years, the DMC has developed a successful model of professional learning and extended support grounded in research and focused on increasing participants’ content and pedagogical knowledge and skills (Horizon, RBS). Our investment in building mathematics leadership capacity spans a decade of in-depth study that has culminated in a proven cycle of inquiry and reflection involving content-focused coaching. The use of protocols developed in collaboration with our higher education and evaluation partners further enhances and sharpens our efforts to promote more conceptually-grounded teaching, mathematical sense making, representations-based argumentation, and student agency in Delaware classrooms.

The DMC professional development team is comprised of a strong cadre of highly respect professional development experts, thought partners, and coaches with a history of success as mathematics leaders in the state. They have invested years building relationships with district partners and served as mathematics supervisors, coaches, assessment writers, district specialists, project leads, and recognized teacher leaders. NCSM Coaching Corner: NSCM’s Coaching Corner provides coaches, specialists, teacher leaders, and administrators with a range of resources to support their coaching efforts.
This website is supported by the Center for Strengthening the Teaching Profession. The site includes links to content and tools related to teacher leadership development. One such tool that may be of particular interest to the community is the Teacher Leadership Skills Framework.
Metamorphosis: Metamorphosis Teaching and Learning Communities was founded by Lucy West, a leader in the world of coaching mathematics and managing systems to support mathematics reform. Lucy is the lead author of Content-Focused Coaching: Transforming Mathematics Lessons and Agents of Change.
The Mathematics Education Collaborative was founded by Ruth Parker. Ruth is a leader in mathematics reform, co-author of Making Number Talks Matters as well as a host of resources and tools for supporting parents and the community.
Teacher Development Group provides resources for leaders of mathematics. The site includes a link to their annual Leadership Seminar. The impressive list of speakers for this seminar includes Amanda Jansen, Virginia Bastable, Michael Flynn, Elham Kazemi, Linda Cooper Foreman, Hilda Borko, Susan Jo Russell, Debra Schifter, Linda Levi, and many other leaders in mathematics research and educational reform.
Elena Aguilar’s Coaching Blog: Education Week includes a monthly blog post by educational leader Elena Aguilar, the author of the The Art of Coaching and The Art of Coaching Teams.
Harvard’s MQI Coaching Institute provides resources and professional learning for coaches of mathematics. MQI’s research has inspired the design of the Delaware Mathematics Coalition’s video analysis lesson study cycle protocol.
